The foggy morning, the soughing wind, the gentle warmth of the sunlight and the mesmerizing view of the Himalayas is what grants the essence to the winters in our homeland of Uttarakhand. Looking at the snow-clad mountains and the enchanting view of the clouds drifting among the valley graces us with the presence of nature’s greatest artist at work. In the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, winter plays a vital role in increasing tourism in the state. 

The winter brings a change after the monsoon season to the state, with the cold gentle breeze in the morning, to the gentle warmth in the afternoon, to the shivering cold at night; it tests human endurance to the extreme. In earlier times, the season of winter might not have gained as much popularity that it receives now. With the improvement in the mode of transportation, to innovations in adventure sports, the winter has turned into the perfect holiday winters for all the age groups in the society. 

People from various backgrounds and with a variety of hobbies or liking have started enjoying the winter irrespective of the bone-chilling cold as per their desires. Some people are captivated by the scenic beauty of the winter, some are attracted to the charm of the winter agriculture and head towards apple orchards, some bewitched by the thrill of the adventure sports and some want to absorb the essence of the winters in its full bloom.

To provide the various opportunity to the people from all the sectors of the society various government and private organizations nowadays organize various winter events or carnivals to attract the people for celebrating it with their loved ones and also for strengthening the financial condition of their zone.
So we have compiled a list of winter carnivals which are to be organized in the next few days for celebrating winter and the festival of Christmas and New Year.
The following events are as per the Uttarakhand Tourism Department.


The 7th Edition of the Mussorie Winter line Carnival begins on 25 Dec till 30 Dec 2019. Rocketing the global vibe of Mussorie beyond the horizon the Mussorie Winter Line Carnival (MWC) would be a host to various events and activities circulating around art and culture, music, heritage, outdoor & nature, and food & shopping over the duration of 6 days creating a gust of excitement rushing through the traveling visiting the Queen of the hills.

Navigated by the local authorities since 2013, MWC has attracted visitors locally as well as internationally. Focusing mainly on promoting Garhwali culture and conserving local heritage, the event is a mix of musical and cultural performances, games and other enthralling activities. The entire town would suit up and display the colors of the festivity during this event; all of Mall road, as well as the hotels, would be decorated for the festival. The event is named as winter line Carnival because this event is celebrated to promote the famous winter line visible every winter during the sunset and provide an enthralling and mesmerizing view of the winter line from the hill station of Mussorie.

Winter Line is a unique phenomenon that is visible during the evening when the sun goes down below the Shivalik range and is filled with various shades of yellow, red, orange and super lined grey and mauve colored strip. This grey and mauve colored strip appears as a horizon and is referred to as winter line, and is a spell bounding scenic view.


The gem of Uttarakhand, a charming hill station sitting in the foothills in the Kumaon ranges of the Himalayas, and famous for its namesake the Naini lake, is one of the most sought after tourist destination in Uttarakhand. It has a title that is world-renowned as “The City of Lakes” dues to the various numbers of lakes in the vicinity.

To celebrate a week-long holiday starting from 25 Dec 19 up toll 27 Dec 19 the Nainital Winter Carnival is being organized by The District Administration, Hotel Association Nainital and the local citizens of Nainital. With various attractions and events and sports; the event is a must-visit for travelers visiting the city. The Nainital tourism board has decided on the list of activities and the schedule for the same includes:
Starting the event on 25 Dec with Inauguration, Fireworks and display, Welcome by drama division, Uttarakhand star night, food carnival. On the second day, dance competition, local performances, comedy shows, and folk artist performance.
Other attractions of the event are Choliya dance, army band, Vigyan fair, photography, bird watching, star gazing, etc.
